Dr. Aycock Interview with KRON August 2008

Dr. Robert Aycock was interviewed in August 2008 for KRON 4 News. During the interview, he discusses “Facelift Season”, the art behind plastic surgery and speaks live to callers. Read the interview here:

Interviewer: Welcome back to Body Beautiful and with us now is plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Aycock. We’ll be taking your calls for Dr. Aycock shortly and he will be answering any questions you have about face lifts. That’s our topic today. We’ll also be posting the phone numbers to the doctor’s office so be ready to jot those down. Alright, Dr. Aycock. You do a lot of things but today we’re concentrating mainly on the face.

Dr. Aycock: Yes, this is, we’re kind of getting into the face lift season. We’re kind of working our way out of liposuction and breast augmentation and the tummy tucks.

Interviewer: There’s a season for face lifts?

Dr. Aycock: Yes. We’re now getting into like what I call the face lift season so we’re kind of regrouping and we’re just going to see more face lifts over the next few months.

Interviewer: You know as a doctor these days you have a bag of tricks that really includes so much.

Dr. Aycock: Right. It’s not just all surgery. We have non-surgical things that we can do, little tricks and they’re not really so much tricks but they’re non-surgical things like the fillers that we do with Botox and lasers and we have our estheticians that do the facials with the chemical peels and microdermabrasion and . . .

Interviewer: Oxygen.

Dr. Aycock: . . . oxygen therapy, right.

Interviewer: Do you find people are coming in saying, “Doc, just buy me a little time, please?’

Dr. Aycock: Sure. That’s, I mean I’m a surgeon. I like to operate but not everybody is ready so we have all these things so that we don’t have to turn them away and say, “You know what? You’re not quite ready for a face lift so we really can’t help you. Now we have all of these options that we have brought into the practice like the fillers and Botox and those sorts of things.

Interviewer: When someone comes to you, I mean, did you say, “You know what? You are ready for a face lift. We’re seeing some jowls. We’re seeing that can’t really be corrected by the injectable.”

Dr. Aycock: Right. Well I may think that they’re ready. They may not think they’re ready so they have to be ready and that’s why when they come in I’ll just say, “What bothers you? What can I do to help you?” Then I give them options so that it’s really their decision to have a face lift or not. Not everybody’s ready and they have to kind of work their way into it.

Interviewer: By ready, I mean part of it is emotional, psychological.

Dr. Aycock: Emotionally, psychologically. They may not be ready. I have patients occasionally come in and say, “I want a face lift.” I go, “You know what? You’re not quite ready. I mean why don’t we do some other things before we do that?”

Interviewer: When someone is seeking a plastic surgeon, I mean obviously they’re going to go down the list and they’re going to say, “This person’s obviously board certified. They meet all the criteria,” but so much of it is word of mouth. It’s good reputation. It’s when you feel like you’re in good hands.

Dr. Aycock: Right. Most of my patients come from other patients now. I still get referrals from doctors and occasionally from other places but for the most part they come from my patients and I did a face lift on their grandmother or their aunt or their best friend’s mother or somebody. They know somebody that I’ve taken care of in the past and they kind of put a lot of credence in that. You still have to check all of the other things, make sure they’re board certified, how long they’ve been in practice, how much of their practice involves these procedures, do they have privileges in the hospitals to do these procedures or can they only do them in their office? There’s some things that you just need to check.

Interviewer: Now there are a lot of, I guess for lack of a better word, procedures, products out there that we see advertised, mini face lifts, quickie kind of deals. What’s the hottest thing going on right now or do you just go back to the traditional what works?

Dr. Aycock: Well if you look at the statistics there are about two million plastic surgery surgeries done that are cosmetic in a year whereas there are ten million non-invasive procedures done like Botox and  Restylane and Allorderm and those things that are really non-invasive so the quick things I think you would have to say are the non-invasive procedures. There’s been such an increase in those procedures that we do.

Interviewer: This is science but it’s also art. We’ve got to take a break. We’ve got some phone calls coming in and we’re going to talk about the art of looking good. For more information about Dr. Aycock you can call 925-727-3337 or on the web, go to aycockmd.com and for the first 20 callers who mention Body Beautiful you’ll be able to receive a complementary consultation. Also I understand, $50 off in injectable treatment and on top of that a complementary clinical facial by their esthetician. We’ll be taking your phone calls and continue our chat about plastic surgery when we come back on Body Beautiful.

Welcome back to Body Beautiful. We are talking right now with Dr. Robert Aycock. We’ll be taking your calls. If there’s any questions you have about plastic surgery here’s the phone number, 800-440-4884. We’ll also be posting the number for the doctor’s office so during and after the segment. Remember any advice we give you today, obviously you’re going to want a second opinion, talk with another physician as well although Dr. Aycock is one of the top.

Before we get to the phone calls and we have our phone calls coming in, let’s look at some before and after pictures. Dr. tells us about this one here.

Dr. Aycock: This is a lady that actually we’ve had her on the show before that had, said she felt like she was looking tired and wanted to be refreshed somewhat.

Interviewer: She was on the show and very happy.

Dr. Aycock: Very nice lady.

Interviewer: The next picture we’ve got?

Dr. Aycock: This is the same lady. This is just from the front and you can see that we’ve corrected the jowling that she had in her neck. She looked pretty good to begin with so I had a pretty good place to start but we just refreshed, she just looks more refreshed around her eyes and her brow.

Interviewer: Got a big smile on her face too. The last picture we have. I guess that was it.

Dr. Aycock: That’s nice.

Interviewer: Let’s go ahead and talk with Cynthia from Petaluma. Good morning, Cynthia. You have a question for Dr. Aycock?

Cynthia: Yes, I do. I was just calling about the three sores that I know about. Which one would last the longest as far as Juvederm, Restylane and the most current one is the, is it called Alloderm?

Interviewer: Cynthia you know your fillers.

Dr. Aycock: Restylane and Juvederm are one type of filler and Alloderm is actually human collagen that’s taken from a tissue bank and that is used more for, as an implant than the Restylane and Juvederm. Those are just injected. Alloderm we actually put it in as an implant and we use it more in, like the lips, to augment lips and and in the nasolabial fold.

Interviewer: But what about rejection of tissue. Is that an issue here?

Dr. Aycock: No. They wash all the cells out so all that’s left is the matrix so that it’s just the collagen that’s left so there’s no chance of rejecting or chance of catching anything from that tissue.

Interviewer: We’ve seen a lot of that in Hollywood. Is that…

Dr. Aycock: Well hyaluronic acid is probably the most common non-operative or minimally invasive procedure that we do.

Interviewer: That’s also in our own bodies as well. It’s just not.

Dr. Aycock: We have that already so that’s the Restylane and Juvederm and they’re both really good products.

Interviewer: Can we jump in, sorry Cynthia. We’re moving on to Josie from Clayton. Good morning, Josie. You have a question for the doctor?

Interviewer: Good morning.

Interviewer: What’s your question for the doc?

Josie: My question is about laser treatment. Can you tell me something about them and how many different kinds there are?

Dr. Aycock: There are dozens of different types of laser treatment. It depends on what it is you’re looking for. The most popular or the newest, I guess would be the fractional resurfacing lasers that we have now so that instead of using the CO2 laser or erbiem laser where we actually ablate the top layer of skin, this punches small columns through the skin to kind of trick the skin into remodeling so that you get the effect without all the down time. You still have two or three days of down time but not the two weeks with several months of redness that we had in the past.

Interviewer: This is pulling up what the collagen, the body’s own ability to kind of…

Dr. Aycock: It makes the dermis remodel so you build more collagen. It kind of turns the skin over so that it just helps with fine lines and tightens the skin a little bit.

Interviewer: Josie, my apologies. I said Jose because we actually do have men who are interested. In fact, do you see men for cosmetic procedures?

Dr. Aycock: Well, yes. I mean we treat quite a few men with these new lasers and it’s more for pre-cancerous lesions that they have on their face. They’ve had so much sun damage that I have a group of men now that have come in so many times for excision of basal cell carcinomas on their face that now we’re treating them with these lasers and it just kind of takes that away.

Interviewer: That’s good to know that it’s possible. This is a big topic. I guess we are out of time unfortunately, Dr. Thank you so much for joining us. We’ll have to have you back. For more information about Dr. Aycock call 925-937-8377 or on the web go to aycockmd.com. For the first 20 callers who mention Body Beautiful you’ll receive a complementary consultation as well as $50 off an injectable treatment and complementary clinical facial by their esthetician. See you next week.

Strongly Supports New Legislation to Ensure Women are Aware of All Breast Cancer Treatment and Insurance Options

Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Robert Aycock, MD Strongly Supports New Legislation to Ensure Women are Aware of All Breast Cancer Treatment and Insurance Options

Greenbrae, CA – September 24, 2013

Robert Aycock, MD, FACS Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Marin County, CA, announced his strong support of the “Breast Cancer Patient Education Act”that requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to plan and implement an education campaign to inform women of the availability and coverage of breast reconstruction, prostheses and other options.

The Secretary may develop information for distribution or may identify information prepared by other organizations. The educational materials would inform women that breast reconstruction is possible at the time of breast cancer surgery, it may be delayed until after other treatments, or they may choose not to have reconstruction and be informed of the availability of prostheses or breast forms. Also, educational materials would inform breast cancer patients that federal law mandates coverage of breast reconstruction, even if such reconstruction is delayed until after other treatments.

“Every woman in the United States should be educated on the post-mastectomy options available to them to improve their quality of life after breast cancer. The “Breast Cancer Patient Education Act” assures that education and I support it wholeheartedly, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month” reported Robert Aycock, MD.

The American Cancer Society reported on September 17, 2013 “The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.”

Dr. Aycock will hold free public educational events to discuss breast reconstruction options and breast health in general. A representative from Allergan, makers of silicon and saline breast implants, will be on hand with implant samples to help women see results they could expect. Attendees will learn about self breast examination from a non-profit organization called CYB, who promotes self examination as a way to aid in early cancer detection.

Marin county event is October 16, from 4:30-6:30 pm and is free to the public. Refreshments will be served and attendees will receive goody bags, courtesy of MyBody. Ten percent of skincare sales from the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society. It will be held at Aycock Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery Center at 575 Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, CA. Call (415) 460-7995 or visit www.AycockMD.com.

East Bay event is October 15, from 12:00-2:00 pm and is free to the public. Lunch will be served and attendees will receive goody bags, courtesy of MyBody. It will be held at Aycock Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery Center at 1855 San Miguel Drive, Suite 4 in Walnut Creek, CA. Call (925) 727-3337 or visit www.AycockMD.com.

Get Sexy Legs With a Thigh Lift

If your thighs lack definition or have become flabby, dimpled and saggy, a skilled cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Robert Aycock can help you return your legs to a youthful contour. A thigh lift, or thighplasty, can help improve the appearance of your upper thighs, greatly enhancing the look and fit of pants and giving you the confidence to wear shorts and show off your legs again.

Performed under general anesthesia, thigh lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that requires expert tissue manipulation techniques. Dr. Aycock creates your ideal contour by gently removing excess skin and fat and tightening the remaining skin, the same principle used for other lift procedures like face lift and buttock lift. Some patients may require liposuction to further refine the area, or benefit from buttock augmentation to create dramatic contour.

Men and women who are over age 18 and are in good health may be approved for a thigh lift after a thorough examination. Many patients complain about sagging skin in the thigh area as a result of genetics, even before the rest of their body shows signs of aging. This procedure is particularly helpful for patients who’ve experienced significant weight loss and would like to get rid of the hanging skin.

The final result of thighplasty is a tighter, firmer thigh appearance. Thigh lift patients may choose additional complementary surgeries like these to help them achieve their optimal proportions:

Nonsurgical Anti-Aging Results With BOTOX®

Want to refine those unwanted signs of facial aging with great results that don’t require surgery? BOTOX® offers a way to turn back the clock without the commitment or risks of more invasive procedures. You can use BOTOX safely on problem areas like those frown lines between the eyes and around the mouth, forehead wrinkles, neck bands, lip lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Although there are a variety of nonsurgical facial fillers and other options, BOTOX remains popular with women and men who enjoy the predictable results and easy treatment sessions.

Approved by the FDA as the first treatment to use botulinum toxin for facial refinement, BOTOX Cosmetic is a method of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. It is very similar to Dysport™, but with a slightly different formula for reducing the appearance of wrinkles. BOTOX’s patented solution is injected into the facial muscles underlying the problem areas. The active ingredient then effectively blocks the signal from the nerves, preventing your muscles from contracting. The result is a relaxed, more youthful appearance.

The effects of BOTOX are temporary, so you’ll need repeat treatments about every 3 – 6 months. You can work with your doctor to decide on a dosage that gives you the level of results you want every time. Treatments take just 20 minutes, so you can pop in for a quick touch up over your lunch break — with no downtime needed.

You may also choose to have BOTOX performed to further enhance the results of facial enhancement procedures like facelift, browlift, or eyelid lift. Other nonsurgical facial procedures that may help you achieve the look you desire include:

Firm and Tone With a Buttock Lift

Aging may have taken a toll on your rear end, but Dr. Robert Aycock can help you restore a youthful, voluptuous shape with a cosmetic procedure called a buttock lift. The buttock lift surgery is often recommended for patients who feel disproportionate and desire a tighter, more attractive derriere.

Goals of a Buttock Lift

A buttock lift procedure is designed to fix sagging skin and remove excess fat in the buttocks — both signs of aging or inherited tendencies. Surgical repair of these features is an effective alternative for men and women who have had disappointing results with diet and exercise. It’s also a commonly requested procedure for people who have lost a significant amount of weight and want to remove the remaining lax skin. You may also use a buttock lift to improve the appearance of asymmetrical or deformed buttocks.

The Buttock Lift Procedure

During the outpatient buttock lift surgery, the surgical team follows exact specifications for tissue removal based on the patient’s personal aesthetic goals.

After the patient is put under general anesthesia, Dr. Aycock will place small incisions at the top of the buttocks, and sometimes make additional incisions in the hips or groin areas. He gently excises the loose skin and excess fat, and then pulls the remaining skin taut. Sutures are placed after the reshaping is complete.

Buttock Lift Recovery

Swelling, bruising, and localized numbness is expected in the days following surgery, and prescription pain medication is available to help with any discomfort. You will be asked to wear a compression garment for a few weeks to minimize swelling and encourage proper healing. Dr. Aycock will make personalized recommendations regarding resuming daily activity based on your post-operative evaluation.

Thank you for your interest in the buttock lift procedure. We are happy to discuss your personal goals during a cosmetic consultation. To schedule yours, please contact Dr. Aycock online or call (925) 727-3337 .

Nonsurgical Anti-Aging Results With Dysport®

You may have heard about one of the newest and most effective facial fillers called Dysport®, a nonsurgical treatment that serves as an alternative to BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Like other nonsurgical facial treatments, Dysport was created to help men and women minimize the appearance of signs of aging like wrinkling, created from repetitive facial expressions over time.

How It Works

Like BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport’s active ingredient is botulinum toxin type A, which works by forcing the facial muscles into a state of contraction. The botulinum toxin is suspended in a solution that is very similar to BOTOX, but with a unique formula that determines a variance in overall effectiveness and longevity of results. Dr. Robert Aycock will tailor your dose and treatment frequency to fit your skin type and help you achieve your individual goals.

BOTOX or Dysport?

Both BOTOX and Dysport can have rejuvenating effects on areas of the face and neck affected by aging and sun damage. Many patients experience quicker and longer-lasting results with Dysport, but individual results vary. For some patients, a combination of BOTOX and Dysport may be optimal. Dysport is also a great alternative for patients who have built up a resistance to BOTOX over time. Dr. Aycock will go over the features of each and help you choose the treatment that will provide the best results for your problem areas.

If you are concerned about loss of facial volume, you may want to supplement your Dysport or BOTOX treatment with a nonsurgical facial filler.

Dysport can help you look younger by improving the appearance of:

  • Frown lines/laugh lines
  • Worry lines
  • Asymmetrical eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Downturned mouth corners
  • Neck bands
  • Chin dimples

If wrinkling and other signs of aging are hurting your confidence, consider the many benefits of Dysport and other facial filler treatments. You can learn more about our extensive facial rejuvenation options when you contact Dr. Aycock for a skin care evaluation.

The Benefits of Breast Reduction

Large breasts may be the envy of many women, but those with excessively large breasts know that the disadvantages can be overwhelming.

An abundance of breast tissue is a physical nightmare for a lot of women. The extra weight often causes back, neck, and shoulder problems, chronic pain, and heavy stress on the bones and joints. Breathing problems and skin irritation are common occurrence, and large breasts tend to sag even before aging takes its toll. Activities like running, lifting, and various fitness activities are challenging. It can be difficult to find bras and clothing that fit comfortably. There’s also an unspoken emotional stress that many women with large breasts endure. Unwanted stares from both men and women affect self-confidence and self-esteem. If you struggle with the physical and emotional effects of oversized breasts, the cosmetic procedure breastreduction offers a permanent solution.

Dr. Aycock will help you decide on the incision location and size that will look and feel great. Dr. RobertAycock removes excess breast tissue and helps you achieve your ideal cup size. During the breast reduction surgery, the surgeon will remove the pre-determined amount of fat and breast tissue. He will also remove a portion of the breast skin to tighten any sagging to create a more aesthetically pleasing shape. He then repositions the nipple and areola to create a natural appearance. The result is a lighter, more youthful breast contour that improves the overall contour of your figure.

Good breast reduction candidates have fully developed breasts and realistic expectations about the procedure’s effects. This surgery is not recommended for women who plan on nursing.

If you struggled with the problem of heavy, awkwardly oversized breasts, consider the many benefits of breast reduction surgery. You can learn more about breast reduction when you contactDr. Aycock at (925) 727-3337 .

Fat Transfer for Facial Refinement

If you prefer a natural approach to wrinkle reduction, fattransfer offers an effective way to improve your appearance without the use of animal-based facial fillers.

Fat transfer from Dr. RobertAycock involves using fat cells from your body to add volume and minimize wrinkles in the face and neck areas. This method provides many benefits, including no risk of allergic reaction or cell rejection and longer-lasting results since the fat cells are your own. More and more women are choosing fat transfer based on the idea that it is a relatively simple and safe solution. Natural-looking results can be achieved in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia — with minimal downtime!

The fat transfer procedure may be able to help you if you are concerned about wrinkles, scars, sagging, and other evidence of loss of volume in the cheeks and other facial areas. Here’s how the procedure is performed:

Dr. Aycock harvests a small amount of excess fat cells from the hips, thighs, abdomen, or other body area. The fat is processed and purified, treated with serum from the patient, and then injected into your problem areas under the skin — most often the face. Sunken cheeks take on a more youthful look, sagging skin becomes tighter, and wrinkles are minimized or eliminated. The recovery from fat transfer is comparatively easy: Most fat transfer patients are able to return to normal activities within days.

If you would like to learn more about the benefits of fat transfer, Dr. Aycock and his team are available to discuss your options. Find out if you are a good candidate for fat transfer by contactingDr. Aycock at your convenience.

Gynecomastia

Excess male breast tissue is embarrassing, but men who keep their chests hidden under shirts for this reason are not alone. Enlarged breasts in men is a condition called gynecomastia and is estimated to affect 40 – 60% of men in the United States. Often the characteristic is genetic, but it can manifest with the aging process or through prolonged use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and certain drugs like steroids.

The physical abnormality of breast overdevelopment in men typically creates a variety of related emotional issues. Men with gynecomastia tend to be extremely self-conscious about the trait. In some cases, it may cause anxiety in social or intimate situations and can have a detrimental effect on confidence.

The good news is that surgical removal of excess breast tissue can eliminate the problem and help restore a positive self-image. During a surgical procedure, Dr. Robert Aycock will gently remove excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue, and excess skin if needed. Liposuction is the primary tissue removal method used to achieve an even, natural-looking contour.

Results can be permanent assuming the patient does not experience significant weight gain. Fitness measures including pectoral exercises will help maintain tone and prevent the return of localized fat deposits. Gynecomastia should not be used as a weight loss tool for men who have not attempted breast reduction through healthy diet and exercise.

You can learn more about surgical solution and view an online presentation on Dr. Ayock’s gynecomastia page. Or, feel free to contact Dr. Aycock at (925) 727-3337 to set up a gynecomastia surgery consultation.
