When’s the Best Time for Body Contouring?

November 13th, 2011

If you are considering reshaping your figure with the help of a skilled cosmetic surgeon, timing is an important factor and can have a direct impact on your results and satisfaction.

Certain body contouring procedures are recommended only at specific stages of life. For instance,

  • The results of a tummy tuck or breast lift are best maintained by women who do not plan to have children after the surgery.
  • Liposuction to remove fat in targeted areas is only suggested after diet and exercise efforts have failed, only on patients with a healthy overall weight.
  • Breast enlargement should only be performed on women over age 18 who have a thorough understanding of how a new breast size will impact their lives.
  • The Mommy Makeover is recommended for women who are done having children.

Healthy Expectations

Your state-of-mind before and after a body contouring procedure is also a factor in the long-term success of your efforts. Dr. Robert Aycock requires that all his patients have realistic expectations of what surgery can and cannot do. Focusing on a healthy lifestyle after surgery is the best way to maintain your  results and positive body image.

As you consider the plethora of body contouring options available to you, advice from our experienced Bay Area plastic surgeon can help you choose the ideal procedures — and decide if the time is right for you to move forward.

What is Vaser Liposuction?

September 26th, 2011

Dr. Robert Aycock and his experienced Bay Area cosmetic surgery team have helped countless men and women achieve their body contouring goals with Vaser liposuction.

Vaser Lipo® is an innovative high-definition fat removal procedure that gets great results with minimal invasiveness. If you have localized areas of stubborn fat that won’t respond to diet and exercise efforts, Vaser may be the ideal solution to help you slim down. Performed in our state-of-the-art plastic surgery facility, Vaser is considered a very safe alternative to traditional liposuction. The recovery is faster and there is less downtime involved, so you can return to work or other activities as soon as Dr. Aycock feels you are ready.

How Vaser Lipo Works

Vaser may be used on any area of the body that needs fat reduction, including the tummy, thighs, butt, arms, neck, and chest. With a special technique called LipoSelection®, these specific areas are targeted as ultrasonic energy breaks up fat tissue.

The precision and gentleness of these techniques ensure excess fat is removed without inflicting harm on surrounding blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Skin appears smoother and a tightened, youthful contour is noticeable within a few months.

Steps of Vaser Lipo

First, Dr. Aycock injects a tumescent fluid with a high concentration of saline to numb the area, shrink blood vessels, and make fat tissue easier to  remove.  He then makes small incisions where the Vaser tube is used to loosen fat cells. The wand gently removes the excess fatty tissue using a gentle suction motion. A comfortable compression garment is worn after surgery to encourage tightening of the skin and ensure proper healing. During the recovery process, patients may experience bruising but should be able to return to normal activities in a short amount of time.

Planning Your Vaser Session

Dr. Aycock can answer all of your liposuction questions and show you his extensive portfolio of liposuction patient photos. Affordable patient financing is available for Vaser Lipo and other body reshaping procedures.

Choose from our nonsurgical treatments to further enhance the results of your Vaser procedure, including laser resurfacing, laser hair removal, and VelaShape™ nonsurgical body contouring.

We invite you to sit down with our body contouring team to discuss the benefits of Vaser Lipo. To set up your personal consultation, please contact Dr. Robert Aycock in the Bay Area today.

The Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

August 21st, 2011

If keeping body or facial hair contained seems to be a constant struggle, we’d like you to consider a nonsurgical approach to a more beautiful you. Laser hair removal and IPL (intense pulsed light) uses the latest technology available to remove unwanted hair from under the skin, where the follicle originates. The process is safe, easy, and highly effective for creating smooth, hairless surfaces.

Ineffective, Temporary Shaving Methods

Daily shaving can be a pain, and we don’t have to tell you how annoying new growth can feel when you don’t have a chance to use the razor. Depilatory creams are messy and sometimes painful, and the results don’t usually last as long as the packaging promises. Waxing can get expensive with repeat treatments needed every few weeks or so, and tweezing often ends badly without the ability to precisely judge your ideal eyebrow shape.

Why the Laser?

Laser and IPL treatments work efficiently, treating hundreds of hair follicles simultaneously. After the recommended treatment regimen of 4 – 8 session at 4 – 8 week intervals, you’ll experience completely halted hair growth without any damage to the skin! Daily shaving becomes a thing of the past.

Personalizing Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Laser and IPL hair removal can be performed on a variety of bodily areas, including the face, legs, upper lip, neck, chest, underarms, bikini line, and back. There are certain qualifications that will render you a good candidate for laser hair removal, so be sure to schedule a personalized exam and orientation to find out if you meet the criteria.

Dr. Robert Aycock and his team will explain your hair removal options and review the procedure details to help you understand how it works, as well as what you can do to experience ideal results over the long-term.

For more information, please view our online hair reduction presentation.

We invite you to come in for an orientation to find out more about the process and the results. If you are ready to try our state-of-the-art laser hair removal, please contact Dr. Robert Aycock in the Bay Area to schedule your appointment.

Rhinoplasty for Facial Balance

July 17th, 2011

Have you always felt that your nose just doesn’t quite fit your face? Do you zone in on your nose in the mirror and view photos of yourself with a sense that there’s room for improvement?

The cosmetic procedure rhinoplasty is an effective method to reshape your nose and improve contour in order to bring a sense of balance and harmony to your face. Achieving a new, personalized profile designed by you and Dr. Aycock can be an long-term source of self-confidence and pride.

The goal of any rhinoplasty at Dr. Aycock’s plastic surgery practice is to provide you with a nasal structure that greatly enhances your aesthetic beauty and appears completely natural as well.

Nasal Design

Building a new nose based on your existing bone structure is an engineering feat that requires a high skill level, a firm grasp on the principles of bone and tissue reshaping, and an ability to not only articulate a vision, but also to bring that vision to reality with sophisticated plastic surgery techniques.

In the process of renewing your nasal profile, Dr. Aycock will perform a methodical facial analysis. The final nose design must be visually appealing on its own, as well as in relation to other facial features like the chin, cheeks, and forehead.

Every face is unique — what may be considered an overly prominent nose on one individual may appear weak or small on another. While Dr. Aycock is faced with the task of creating a nose shape that is pleasing to the eye, he must also design and execute a final nose appearance that brings all other features into balance. Finally, Dr. Aycock must ensure that any changes made respect the flow of air through the nostrils and allow for optimal breathing function.

What Would You Change?

Does your nose seem to broad, long, or bumpy for your liking? Perhaps the nostrils are too wide, or the tip is too bulbous. Whatever the problem, Dr. Aycock can work with you to develop a refreshed, attractive nose. Feel free to bring in photos of specific nose types that you find appealing. Dr. Aycock and his team will help you settle on a final design that is just right for your face. In some cases, the addition of a chin augmentation or cheek implants may help improve a patient’s rhinoplasty results.

To get an idea of the results that are possible with rhinoplasty, we invite you to view our nose surgery before and after photos. If you are ready to discuss the benefits of nose surgery and find out if you are a good candidate, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Robert Aycock at your earliest convenience.

Weight Loss and the Stages of a Body Lift

July 8th, 2011

If you have lost a significant amount of weight, a lower body lift is an effective cosmetic procedure for enhancing and slimming the areas affected by resulting sagging skin, such as the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. Loose skin is removed for a more toned appearance, residual fat is excised, and weak muscles are tightened. After a body lift, patients enjoy a newfound confidence and an improved appearance.

Body Lift Personalization

Since every body lift patient has unique needs, Dr. Robert Aycock will tailor your procedure based on the affected areas and degree of correction required for optimal improvement. Generally, the stages of a body lift are performed based on each patient’s specific areas of concern.

A body lift is often combined with inner thigh lift, arm lift, breast lift, breast augmentation in women, or gynecomastia correction in men. Liposuction to remove localized fat may also be performed in conjunction with each stage to provide optimal recontouring results.

The Three Stages

The body lift procedure can take anywhere from a few hours to several hours, depending on the extent of the issues. In the first two stages, the buttock, thigh, back, and hip areas are targeted. Sagging skin resulting from weight loss and aging is excised, and liposuction is applied to remove stubborn fat cells. During the third and final stage, excess skin and fat is removed from the abdominal area and the core muscles are tightened in a method similar to a tummy tuck.

Are You a Candidate?

If you have shed significant weight through diet and exercise, gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding, or other method, a body lift can help you achieve a normal, healthy-looking body contour through the removal of excess skin and residual fat deposits. The entire trunk area is reduced, firmed, and smoothed for results that help you finalize your appearance after weight loss.

For an in-depth look at the body lift procedure, our Lower Body Lift presentation includes procedure steps, preparation, and post-surgery information. To discuss your body lift candidacy, please contact Dr. Robert Aycock in the Bay Area.

Surgical Breast Correction for Asymmetry

June 18th, 2011

If your breasts are different sizes or shapes, you are not alone. While perfect breasts are the standard in Hollywood, very few women are actually born with identical breasts. Asymmetry is a very common occurrence and may manifest in many ways, including shape, size, nipple height, or areola size variations.

While asymmetry in natural breast tissue is normal, you don’t have to keep them that way. Expert surgical correction from Dr. Robert Aycock is an effective avenue to ensure your breasts are more closely matched.

Could You Benefit From Corrective Breast Surgery?

For many women, the philosophy that “you feel good when you look good” rings true. A physical imbalance can lead to feelings of self-consciousness or low self-esteem, and a surgical improvement can free the mind from obsessing over these imperfections. Thankfully, breast surgery offers a time-tested option for women who want to improve the appearance of differing breasts.

You may be a good candidate for breast asymmetry surgery if you are bothered by the appearance of your asymmetrical breasts, the imbalance makes it difficult to find bras or clothes that fit, and you feel a change would enhance your self-confidence.

Personal Breast Design

Breast asymmetry surgery requires an in-depth physical evaluation to fully understand the problem and develop a fitting solution. You want to make sure your surgeon has many years of experience along with the proper skill necessary to deliver a beautiful, natural-looking result. If you undergo corrective breast surgery on one or both breasts, Dr. Aycock will tailor your procedure to precisely fit your personal needs.

Dr. Aycock was voted one of The Most Dependable Plastic Surgeons of the Western United States
in 2008, recognized as the Best
Plastic Surgeon,
MedSpa, and Healthcare
Surgery Center
in Marin County in
2008 and 2009, and
voted Bohemian Best of the Northbay
2008 and 2009.

Depending on your degree of asymmetry, Dr. Aycock will choose the technique or combination of techniques carefully to deliver ideal proportions. While slight asymmetry can often be corrected with minimal manual excision and tissue reshaping, more dramatic cases of imbalance may require additional or alternative methods.

A breast augmentation procedure can be performed with two different sized implants to help you achieve a uniform appearance. If you have one breast that is much larger than the other, a breast reduction may be used to even out the tissue. After a thorough physical examination and discussion of your breast appearance goals, you and Dr. Aycock will decide on the best method of achieving your perfect result.

A more aesthetically pleasing, balanced breast appearance can do wonders to create a positive body image. To discuss your breast asymmetry correction opportunities, please contact Dr. Robert Aycock in the Bay Area.

Is There an Age Limit on Your Bikini Body?

June 5th, 2011

At what age should a woman stop wearing a bikini?

A May 2011 Today Show story highlighted a recent poll of 2000 women who put the bikini’s “expiration date” at age 47. Miniskirts were pinned at 35, and stilettos at 35. Editor-in-chief of Allure Magazine Linda Wells disagreed with the findings, saying that “the message should not be that you can’t wear these things after a certain age, the message is to take a look at yourself and wear them with confidence if you feel good about it.”

A panel of health and beauty experts agreed that it’s not about age, it’s about appropriateness and that “if it’s a matter of gravity, there are things that can help you.”

Matching What’s Outside to Inner Beauty

Beauty is more than skin deep, and attractiveness is not defined by age. Most men will tell you that confidence is an attractive trait, even more so than physical features. If you are missing that key confidence due to dissatisfaction with your physical appearance, cosmetic surgery that is performed with great skill and personalization can help you accentuate your natural beauty. An experienced, successful cosmetic surgeon is able to play upon the strength of your positive features and downplay or restore your weaker ones for a beautiful reinvention.

Cosmetic Surgery for a Bikini-Ready Body

Dr. Robert Aycock is one such San Francisco cosmetic surgeon who has helped many women enhance their figures with safe, state-of-the-art procedures. Liposuction can minimize fat deposits in places like the thighs, love handles, and stomach, and is extremely useful when diet and fitness efforts fail. A tummy tuck can help you get rid of the stubborn tummy pouch, and breast surgery can enhance and lift sagging or small breasts. Other procedures like the buttock lift, leg lift, and arm lift can target specific body areas to get you back in the bikini game.

Choosing Your Swim Attire

Today’s swimwear styles are creative and cater to all body types. From the Brazilian bikini to the modest one-piece, there is something for everyone out there. If you prefer to ease your way back to the bikini, try a tankini that combines a tank top for more coverage with a normal bikini bottom. Visit a comprehensive swimwear shop and play with different shapes and fits until you find one that flatters. Experts agree the golden rule of choosing swimwear is only this: wear what you feel comfortable in.

As many women age, descriptions of their personal style often change from  “hot” and “sexy” to “tasteful” or “classy.” Whether your philosophy is “leave something to the imagination” or “flaunt it if you’ve got it,” Dr. Aycock and his team can help you fine-tune your shape with state-of-the-art body contouring procedures.

To quote Today Show co-anchor Natalie Morales, “If Sharon Stone can do it at age 53, then why can’t you?”

Sun Damage: The Risks and Remedies

May 22nd, 2011

A nice, even tan is a coveted feature, creating a “healthy” glow and boosting self-confidence. But in reality, below that sun-kissed skin may hide irreversible sun damage.

Risks of Sun Exposure

The sun’s rays contain the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation waves, notorious for defiling clear, youthful skin with sunspots, discoloration, and wrinkles. Both types of UV rays, UVA and UVB, can directly cause premature aging and skin cancer. When you endure prolonged sun exposure, you’re risking your appearance and your health. Despite the prevalent warnings regarding too much sun, sunblock and protective clothing are not a priority for most people. However, taking measures to shield your delicate outer layer from the sun today can prevent some of the severe consequences of sun damage.

We encourage all of our patients concerned about sun damage to visit a dermatologist for a full body skin assessment annually.

Sun Damage Remedies

While prevention is the best defense against sun damage, there are ways you can improve the appearance of early aging due to sun exposure. After a personalized skin care evaluation, Dr. Robert Aycock can design a treatment program to minimize the appearance of sun damage on your face and body. With advanced laser technology and patented skin solutions, his skin care team is able to reduce freckles, photo damage, wrinkles, fine lines, and pigmentation issues. You may even be able to use these treatments to prevent sun-related appearance issues that may become apparent many years down the road.

The following state-of-the-art cosmetic treatments can promote smoother skin, improve tone and texture, encourage skin regeneration, tighten pores, and minimize blemishes.

Don’t let the cumulative effects of sun damage sneak up on you. If you would like to learn more about the cosmetic technology used to combat early aging due to sun exposure, please contact Dr. Robert Aycock.
