What Is a Neck Lift or Platysmaplasty?

As we age, the muscles in our neck and surrounding skin begin to droop or sag, causing unwanted creases which come together in this area. Commonly referred to as “turkey neck,” this combination of creases and sagging skin can make us look years older. A neck lift can correct these issue and gives you more beautiful, youthful-looking skin.

How Is a Neck Lift Performed?

There are two types of neck lifts, depending on the degree of surgery needed and the area being treated. A traditional neck lift starts at the area of the sideburn and continues down the ear and neck area. Fat may be removed from the jowls and surrounding area and possibly redistributed to allow for a more smooth appearance. The underlying tissue is repositioned, and liposuction may be performed to remove fat cells from the area while allowing for proper skin contour.

Another type of neck lift involves limited incisions which simply serve to tighten the skin around the neck. While less involved with less recovery time needed in these cases, the results may be limited only to the affected area and not the surrounding structure of the face.

Preparing for a Neck Lift

You may be asked to have lab testing or a medical evaluation done to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your surgery. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

Neck Lift Recovery*

After surgery, you will return home in bandages to protect the neck. Initial discomfort can easily be controlled with oral pain medication, and swelling and bruising typically subside in about two weeks. The final results of neck lift surgery are evident in just one to three months. Sutures or adhesives may be used to seal the skin and allow for improved recovery. Sutures may dissolve on their own or may need to be removed later. Scars are strategically hidden around the contours of the neck and ears.

The cost of a neck lift in the San Francisco Bay Area varies depending on the type and extent of surgery needed. Dr. Aycock provides convenient financing options, including CareCredit® and Prosper Healthcare Lending® ; to help cover the cost of your surgery, and you may be approved in as little as an hour.
