Breast Enhancement

What Is Breast Enhancement?

Breast Enhancement, also known as breast augmentation or mammoplasty, involves the use of implants or fat grafts to increase the size, shape, or contour of the breasts. Breast Enhancement can also be used to reconstruct the breast, such as in the case of a mastectomy or congenital defect with the breast or surrounding chest area. When used as an elective cosmetic procedure, breast augmentation or reduction is used to improve the size, shape, and texture of the breasts.

Benefits of Breast Enhancement

Many people who choose to undergo Breast Enhancement surgery do so for either physical or cosmetic reason. Physically, breasts that are too large for a woman’s frame may cause pain in the shoulders and back. Breast Enhancement surgery can also correct asymmetrical breasts. For men, gynecomastia is a condition caused by the swelling of breast tissue which leads to abnormally large breasts. Gynecomastia can often be traced to an endocrine condition that changes the balance of estrogen and testosterone in the body. Breast reduction surgery is used to treat men with gynecomastia.

Whatever the reason for Breast Enhancement, patients report feeling more confident and self-assured and report less pain in the case of breast reduction.

Preparing for Breast Enhancement

To obtain the best possible results from your surgery, proper preparation is key. It is best if you are a non-smoker and non-drinker or are willing to quit in the weeks leading up to your surgery. This allows your body to heal faster. You should be at or near your ideal weight and not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s important to note that women can still breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery once the body has had the proper time to recover. Silicone gel implants can be used for women 22 years of age or older while saline implants can be used on patients as young as 18 years old. Implants have been used on women younger than 18 years old; however, these are solely to correct congenital deformities and not for cosmetic reasons.

How Is Breast Enhancement Performed?

There are two main types of breast augmentation implants: one filled with a sterile saline and another filled with viscous silicone gel. These implants come in both spherical (round) and hemispherical (oval-like) shapes, giving a woman complete control over the shape and texture of her breasts. Different types of incisions are made depending on the anatomical makeup and shape of the breast muscles. These incisions ensure maximum coverage of the implants. In the case of breast reconstruction surgery, fat grafts are used to recreate the breasts and improve their symmetry. Fat grafts allow for better contour and structure that cannot be achieved with plastic surgery methods alone. In these instances, a device is implanted to allow for gradual expansion of the breast tissue and to later allow the fat grafts to be deposited.

Breast Enhancement Recovery*

Most surgical scarring related to Breast Enhancement will heal after six weeks and gradually fade. Depending on the demands of daily physical activities, most women resume their normal tasks after one week. It is recommended that you avoid strenuous exercise or activity for six weeks after the surgery, although you are encouraged to flex and move your arms to help reduce discomfort. You will also be given analgesic pain relievers to help alleviate post-surgical discomfort.
