Breast Lift Surgery - San Francisco
By Bay Area Surgeon Dr. Aycock
It's a simple fact of life that a woman's breasts will begin to sag over time. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can speed the process, but eventually every woman's breasts will lose their youthful shape and firmness.
Breast lift surgery, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure in which a woman's breasts are reshaped and lifted to a higher position on the chest. During breast lift surgery, Dr. Aycock can also reduce the size of the areola, the dark skin surrounding the nipple. If you are interested in increasing your breast size as well as improving their position, then you may wish to consider breast implant surgery in addition to a breast lift.
Breast lift surgery is commonly sought by women whose breasts have been stretched by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breast lift surgery should not affect a woman's ability to breastfeed in the future, but subsequent pregnancies can cause the breasts to stretch again, requiring a second breast lift. Therefore, breast lift surgery is most effective in woman who will not be having more children in the future.
Breast Lift Procedure Information
In your initial consultation, it's important to discuss your expectations frankly with San Francisco surgeon Dr. Aycock so that he can best match the procedure with your desired outcome. Every patient and every physician as well has a different view of what is a desirable size and shape for breasts.
After an exam, Dr. Aycock will discuss with you the factors that may affect the surgery, such as the shape and size of your breasts, your age, your skin condition, and whether or not you would like to include breast implant surgery. Your nipple and areola will be moved higher during the breast lift procedure, as well.
Don't hesitate to ask Dr. Aycock any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results of your breast lift surgery.
Mastopexy usually takes one and a half to three and a half hours. Techniques vary, and Dr. Aycock will discuss possible incision locations with you. Breast skin will be removed from the incision area in order to tighten the skin. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to the higher position. Sutures are most commonly placed around the areola and following the incision location.
Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery
After breast lift surgery, you will return home with bandages held in place by a surgical bra. Your breasts may feel uncomfortable for a day or two, but the bruising and swelling should not be severe. Most discomfort can be controlled with oral medications prescribed by Dr. Aycock.
You may be up and about in a day or two, but don't plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel; and avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. If you have any unusual symptoms, don't hesitate to call Dr Aycock.
Dr. Aycock will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities following breast lift surgery.
Your satisfaction with a breast lift is likely to be greater if you understand the procedure thoroughly and if your expectations are realistic. You may be interested in combining a breast lift with Breast Enlargement if you also desire larger breasts.
