What Is an Arm Lift?
An arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, involves making an incision in the arm, usually from the shoulder to the elbow, and removing excess skin left over after substantial weight loss. The skin is then sutured back together to create a tighter, more even frame.
Benefits of an Arm Lift
No amount of exercise will reduce or lessen the drooping, flabby skin hanging from your arms after weight loss. An arm lift will provide the following benefits:
- Restore your upper arms’ natural tone and structure
- Lessen the appearance of “bat wings” and prevent chafing
- Give you the confidence to wear short sleeves and tank tops again!
Preparing for an Arm Lift
You may be asked to have lab testing or a medical evaluation done to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your arm lift. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.
How Is an Arm Lift Performed?
An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, is typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Aycock will make an incision from the elbow to the armpit, remove the excess skin, and suture the arm skin back together along the incision line. Although the incision is in an inconspicuous place, some scarring will always be visible. You will immediately notice smoother, tighter skin on your arms, although there may be some swelling and bruising after the procedure.
Arm Lift Recovery
After arm lift surgery, the upper arms will be bandaged to reduce swelling. The incision will probably heal within one or two weeks, at which time the sutures will be removed. Most bruising and swelling gradually disappear within a month, with all swelling gone within three to six months. The scars will fade over time, but some scarring may always be present. Liposuction of the upper arms may be used, in addition to brachioplasty, to further contour the arms.
