Expression lines and wrinkles can appear earlier than you expect them. If wrinkles on your forehead, between your brows, or around your eyes have started to bother you, it may be time to consider Botox® or Dysport®. These two injectable treatments work in a similar way but have differences that may affect which one is right for you.

What are Botox® and Dysport®?

Dysport® and Botox® are both line and wrinkle treatments that use a compound called botulinum toxin. This compound works by interrupting the signals between facial nerves and muscles. As a result, the targeted muscles relax, letting your features look wrinkle-free and refreshed. They work in the same basic way, but small differences affect how quickly they work and how long they last.

Botox® vs. Dysport®: Which Lasts Longer?

Both Botox® and Dysport® are extremely effective for relaxing wrinkles. The main difference between them is that they use different proteins that accompany the botulinum toxin to its destination. Dysport® uses a protein that helps it reach the targeted nerves sooner. As a result, Dysport® results take 48 hours or less to appear, while Botox® can take a week or more.

When comparing which one lasts longer, the differences between the two come down to how each person responds. On average, both will last for three to four months. Some people experience longer-lasting results with Botox® or Dysport®.

People who have been getting Botox® for a long time can become less responsive to it as their body starts to recognize the protein. Since Dysport® uses a different protein that the body does not recognize, these people may see improved results by switching.

Only a consultation can determine which treatment will work best for you. Dr. Aycock often prefers Dysport® and recommends it for many people, but the choice is based on your needs and goals.

Is There Any Downtime After Botox® or Dysport®?

One factor that makes treatments like Botox® and Dysport® so popular is the lack of downtime. You can return to work or your daily activities immediately. You may notice redness, bruising, or swelling in the area lasting a day or two.

The likelihood of these effects is the same for both treatments and, in both cases, is mild and rarely bothersome. You can limit the likelihood of bruising by avoiding NSAIDs like ibuprofen, certain supplements, and alcohol before treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® or Dysport®?

Since these treatments work in a similar way, people who are good candidates for Botox® are usually also candidates for Dysport®. Candidates want to address lines and wrinkles with a non-surgical treatment. You should not have either treatment if you have a skin infection, active skin condition, or certain medical conditions.

I finally had coolsculpting on my tummy and what a surprisingly easy treatment it was. Ashley the nurse was fantastic and she used the new hand piece that is smaller and faster. It was painless except for the 2-minute massage after the treatment but not bad at all. I’m a little sore today but this was easy-breezy and I can’t wait to see my results. I highly recommend it.
