Getting Implants After Breastfeeding
While every patient is different, we usually recommend that women wait at least six months after breastfeeding before getting breast augmentation surgery. You want to be absolutely sure that you’re done with breastfeeding, as you won’t be able to breastfeed during your breast augmentation recovery.
During your breast augmentation consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss when is best for you to undergo this surgery. In addition to talking about when you last breastfed, you can expect to discuss your medical history, your goals for the surgery, and whether or not you plan on continuing to grow your family.
What If You Plan on Having More Kids?
If you plan on having more kids, you may want to hold off on breast augmentation.
Here’s why: While breast augmentation is incredibly safe, there is a small chance that you’ll lose sensation in your nipples whether the incisions are placed under the arm, under the breast or around the areola. The risk may increase if incisions are being made around the areola. Loss of sensation in the nipple could make it difficult for moms to successfully breastfeed, as it could interfere with the body’s response to the baby latching on.
Therefore, it’s highly recommended that moms who want to have more babies and want the opportunity to breastfeed wait to consider breast augmentation.
