New Silicone Gel Breast Implants

A new generation of FDA-approved silicone gel breast implants is now available to women over 22 years of age. These silicone gel breast implants have been proven safe, comfortable and have a natural look and feel. Silicone breast implants are made of a cohesive gelatin-like material that holds its shape while also creating the feeling of natural breast tissue.

How to Decide Between Silicone and Saline Breast Implants

While saline-filled breast implants are still available, the availability of silicone gel breast implants offers women more variety in their breast implant options. Both silicone and saline breast implants are available in different sizes, textures, and profiles.

Dr. Aycock is Medical Director of the Breast Center of Northern California and was given the honor of NOVO-2008 “Distinguished member of the National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics.”

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, clinically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is the process of using your own body fat and tissue or synthetic implants to increase the shape, size, and volume of the breasts.

Working through the incision, Dr. Aycock will lift your breast tissue and skin to create a pocket, either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle). The breast implants are then centered beneath your nipples.

Breast enlargement surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete. Stitches are used to close the incisions, which may also be taped for greater support. A gauze bandage may be applied over your breasts to help with healing.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?

By inserting a saline or silicone breast implant behind each breast, Dr. Aycock is able to increase a woman’s bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. A saline breast implant is a silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution. Alternatively, a new generation of silicone gel breast implants is now available. During your consultation, Dr. Aycock and you will decide together whether saline or silicone gel implants is the right choice for you.

The method of inserting and positioning your breast implant will depend on your anatomy, the type of implant that you choose, and Dr. Aycock’s recommendation. The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit. Every effort will be made to ensure that the incision is placed so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible.

Preparing for Breast Augmentation

You may be asked to undergo lab testing or a medical evaluation to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your breast augmentation. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

Breast Augmentation Recovery*

Breast augmentation recovery may involve the placement of bandages or dressings to allow the incisions to heal. You may be asked to wear an elastic garment for approximately six weeks to allow the breasts to heal. There may be a small amount of drainage, and it’s possible that your breasts will be bruised or uncomfortable for a few days. Recovery time varies but it helps considerably to be in good health and engage in regular physical activity before undergoing the surgery. Further information on breast augmentation recovery can be found with our partnering plastic surgeons.
