Breast Lift

What Is a Breast Lift?

It’s a simple fact of life that a woman’s breasts will begin to sag over time. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can speed the process, but, eventually, every woman’s breasts will lose their youthful shape and firmness.

Breast lift surgery, also called mastopexy, is a surgical procedure in which a woman’s breasts are reshaped and lifted to a higher position on the chest. During breast lift surgery, San Francisco Bay Area surgeon Dr. Aycock can also reduce the size of the areola, the dark skin surrounding the nipple. If you are interested in increasing your breast size as well as improving their position, then you may wish to consider breast augmentation surgery, in addition to a breast lift.

Breast lift surgery is commonly sought by women whose breasts have been stretched by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breast lift surgery should not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed in the future, but subsequent pregnancies can cause the breasts to stretch again, requiring a second breast lift. Therefore, breast lift surgery is most effective in a woman who will not be having more children in the future.

Preparing for a Breast Lift

It’s very common to be excited and maybe even a little nervous before your breast lift surgery. During your free consultation with Dr. Aycock, you should be very honest about your expectations. Often, a breast lift is done after pregnancy, when breasts can swell and stretch. Although you can still breastfeed after having a breast lift performed, you are advised that further pregnancies will cause the breasts to stretch again and may require subsequent surgery.

How Is a Breast Lift Performed?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, removes excess skin to tighten the shape of the breasts and reduce the size of the areola. Often, women who are pregnant or nursing will ultimately choose to have a breast lift to regain some of their pre-pregnancy breast shape and youthful contour. A breast lift will not significantly increase or decrease the size of the breasts themselves. Should you wish to have this done in addition to your breast lift, ask Dr. Aycock about breast augmentation or reduction surgery.

Dr. Aycock is Medical Director of the Breast Center of Northern California and was given the honor of NOVO-2008 “Distinguished member of the National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics.”

Breast Lift Recovery*

After breast lift surgery, you will return home with bandages held in place by a surgical bra. Your breasts may feel uncomfortable for a day or two, but the bruising and swelling should not be severe. Most discomfort can be controlled with oral pain medications prescribed by Dr. Aycock.

You may be up and about in a day or two, but don’t plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel, and avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. If you have any unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to call Dr. Aycock.

Dr. Aycock will give you detailed instructions for resuming your normal activities following breast lift surgery.
