Liposuction

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the removal of excess fat through the use of small, blunt tubes known as “cannula.” Many liposuction techniques involve the use of water, laser, or ultrasound to break up stubborn fat cells and suction them out. Once removed, fat cells will never reappear in that area again.

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States.

Vaser liposuction surgery allows for effective removal of fat from the abdominal area, hips, buttocks, and thighs. Liposuction can also be used to remove smaller amounts of fat in areas of the neck, face, and arms. Although liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise, it can be helpful in removing stubborn areas of fat. Liposuction can be performed alone or in conjunction with another plastic surgery procedure, such as tummy tuck, buttock lift, arm lift, neck lift, or facelift

Preparing for Liposuction

You may be asked to have lab testing or a medical evaluation done to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your surgery. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

During liposuction cosmetic surgery, San Francisco surgeon Dr. Aycock inserts a narrow tube into a small incision made in an inconspicuous point near the area of fat removal. This tube is connected to a strong vacuum, which removes unwanted fat for improved contour.

Liposuction is the surgical vacuuming of fat from beneath the surface of the skin. It is used to reduce fullness in any area of the body. It is an excellent method of spot reduction but is not an effective method of weight loss.

What Is The Tumescent Technique?

The tumescent technique involves injection beneath the skin of large volumes of salt water containing lidocaine, a local anesthetic, and small amounts of adrenaline, a naturally occurring hormone which shrinks blood vessels. By injecting this solution into the fat prior to performing liposuction, the plastic surgeon numbs the tissues and shrinks the blood vessels, thereby lessening discomfort and reducing and minimizing bleeding, bruising, and swelling. The tumescent technique permits some patients who were previously treated under general anesthesia to be treated under local anesthesia with sedation.

Which Areas Are Most Frequently Treated?

In women, the single most frequently treated areas are the outer thighs, followed by the stomach. In men, the flank area or “love handles” are treated most frequently.

Can Liposuction Tighten Up A Loose Neck?*

If there is excess fat in the area under the chin and the skin is taut, liposuction alone can produce a more sculpted, angular, and youthful jawline. If, however, the skin of the neck is loose, hanging, or crepey, even if there is excess fat, liposuction alone will not produce the desired result. Patients with loose skin usually require a face and neck lift, in addition to or instead of, liposuction. In general, most patients who benefit from liposuction of the neck are under 40. Most patients over 40 will require some surgical skin tightening.

After your surgery, small tubes may be placed under your skin to aid with the drainage of excess fluid. You may also be required to wear an elastic compression garment to help your skin adjust to your new figure. It may take several months for the swelling to go down, during which your beautiful new figure will emerge!
