Breast Reconstruction

What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a series of surgical techniques which work to restore the shape, texture, and size of one or both breasts. In some cases, if only one breast is affected, a breast augmentation or breast lift may be used to increase symmetry between breasts.

Is Breast Reconstruction Right for Me?

Breast reconstruction is an ideal procedure for you if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • You’ve lost a breast due to cancer or an accident.
  • You have congenital defects that necessitate breast reconstruction.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Dr. Aycock will take the time to go over your complete medical history to ensure there are no conflicts or issues that could arise during or after your plastic surgery procedure. He will discuss your goals and anticipated outcome of your surgery, as well as answer any questions you may have. Depending on the type of procedure you plan to have done, he may examine the area being treated. Every consultation is done with the utmost professional courtesy and thorough explanation of each step to ensure that you are informed and comfortable with the process. Once you feel fully assured and satisfied with the answers, you can move forward with scheduling your surgery.

Preparing for Breast Reconstruction

Dr. Aycock will carefully examine your medical history during your free consultation. Ideally, you should be a non-smoker or stop smoking well in advance of your surgery. You may need to adjust your existing medication regimen as well.

How Is a Breast Reconstruction Performed?

Depending on the issue that caused the original breast to be removed, there may or may not be enough of the woman’s own breast muscle to act as a key structure for reconstructing the breast. Donor muscle, as well as fat and tissue from other areas of the body, may be used to help reshape the breast. If the use of an implant is required, a tissue expansion is generally used to help make room for the implant. Grafting and other specialized techniques such as tattooing are then used to create an areola and nipple.

Dr. Aycock is Medical Director of the Breast Center of Northern California and was given the honor of NOVO-2008 “Distinguished member of the National Council of Leaders in Breast Aesthetics.”

Depending on the type of breast reconstruction, you may need to wear an elastic bra or bandage to help support the area. A small tube may be inserted to help with drainage. Dr. Aycock will let you know of any specific procedures or recovery steps to take to minimize swelling and discomfort. If you will be staying at a hospital, arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
