What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the use of cosmetic surgery to improve the shape of the nose and surrounding structures. It may also involve the nostrils and the bridge of the nose and can help correct issues caused by trauma, accident or congenital (birth) defects.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

If you’re receiving unwanted attention or comments directed at the shape of your nose or nostrils, you may feel self-conscious about the way you look. A rhinoplasty can do the following:

  • Reduce nose size.
  • Modify nose shape (including nose angle, slope, or nose tip or bridge shape).
  • Reduce or modify nostril shape and size.
  • Restore appearance following a nose injury.
  • Correct appearance resulting from a birth defect.
  • Improve breathing.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty

You may be asked to have lab testing or a medical evaluation done to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your surgery. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

In most nose surgery procedures, the nasal skin is cut and lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath, allowing Dr. Aycock to reshape the underlying nose structure. The skin is then re-draped over the “new” framework, and a soft splint is applied to help the nose maintain stability in adapting to its new form.

Rhinoplasty Recovery*

Bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort can be expected after rhinoplasty surgery, but all can be alleviated with cold compresses and medication prescribed by Dr. Aycock. Splints and stitches are removed in about a week, and you can usually expect to return to work within about a week, with the most visible swelling and bruising typically disappearing within two weeks. Strenuous activities may be resumed within a few months.
