Lip Augmentation

What Is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is the process of enhancing the lips through either lip implants or temporary fat transfer or fillers. All types are designed to give you thicker, fuller, and plumper lips. There are two main types of lip augmentation:

Temporary Lip Augmentation

Temporary lip implants can be inserted into the lips using synthetic materials, your own fat, or donated tissue. They are soft and flexible and feel completely natural. They can also be easily removed should you decide to do so in the future. Another option to enhance the size and shape of your lips is to use dermal fillers such as Juvederm®, Restylane®. These fillers are injected into your lips, leaving them looking more plump and voluminous. If you choose this option, you will need to repeat the procedure periodically to keep your lips looking full. Many patients who are considering lip implants try out a new look using injectable dermal fillers first.

Dr. Aycock or his registered nurses will help you decide which dermal filler is right for you. Injections of dermal fillers into your lips are done in our office, and you can return to your normal activities immediately.

Lip Implants

Lip implants are the best way to achieve fuller, thicker lips over the long term. They are made of a variety of materials, including silicon, your own tissue, donated human tissue and other artificial materials. The implants are soft and pliable and feel natural. They can also be easily removed if you decide to go back to your natural appearance. Most lip implant surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic, and your recovery period will be fairly short – around a week in most cases.

Before you consider lip implants, it’s a good idea to try a temporary dermal filler to see how you like your new look.

Benefits of Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation offers a number of benefits to our patients, including the following:

  • The look and feel of plumper, more luxurious lips.
  • A more proportionate face related to the size of the lips.
  • Improved self-confidence and body image.

Preparing for Lip Augmentation

If you are a smoker, you may be asked to quit in the weeks leading up to your procedure. Your lips may be tender after the augmentation process, so it’s important to wear a blouse that is button-down so that you don’t have to pull it up over your head. You should not take aspirin or ibuprofen before the procedure as this can increase bleeding.

Lip Augmentation Recovery*

Recovery from temporary lip augmentation is usually very mild and you can continue resuming your normal activities immediately. Surgical options may have a longer recovery time, up to a week in some cases. You may wish to eat soft foods including gelatin, applesauce, pudding, and other types of food that require minimal chewing.
