If you’re interested in a tummy tuck procedure, you already know that this surgery can be pivotal for getting the smoother, firmer-looking stomach that you’ve always wanted. After all, you haven’t been able to get your tummy back to your pre-baby body, no matter how much diet and exercise you do.

But there’s just one thing holding you back from undergoing a tummy tuck – the recovery time.

Most people who need a tummy tuck (also known as an abdominoplasty) have damaged abdominal walls as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. That means they’re busy moms – and it’s not exactly easy to take lots of time off to recover from surgery.

Fortunately, tummy tuck recovery might not take as long as you think. Here’s an overview of what you can expect from your tummy tuck recovery process:

  • The first week of the tummy tuck is where you’ll need to really dedicate yourself to downtime. During this period, you’ll need to wear a compression garment to reduce surgical swelling. Your plastic surgeon may even place drainage tubes in the abdominal area; these tubes are usually removed during the first week. You won’t be allowed to pick up any objects or move around that much, so make sure you schedule childcare.
  • During the second week, you might start feeling more like yourself again. Some patients may choose to return to work at this time. If you work a more manual job, you’ll need to take another week to continue recovering.
  • You’ll need to continue wearing your compression garment for at least four to six weeks; your plastic surgeon will recommend the best time to remove the garment. At this time, your plastic surgeon may clear you to return back to the gym.
  • Wondering when you can start having sex again? Like anything, you’ll need to approach it with moderation. Most patients can start having sex 10 days after the procedure, but it’s a personal decision and should be based on how you feel.
