Ear Surgery

What Is Ear Surgery?

Ear reshaping surgery (also known as ear pinning) is usually performed to reduce the size or prominence of the ears. Otoplasty is often performed on children after the age of four. However, many adults choose ear reshaping surgery to rectify life-long concerns and improve self-image.

Most patients, young and old alike, are thrilled with the results of ear surgery. Dr. Aycock takes plenty of time with his patients before surgery to answer any questions and help resolve any concerns. He is especially careful in helping children feel comfortable with surgery.

Benefits of Ear Surgery

An ear surgery can address specific concerns about the shape or positioning of the ears while giving you the following benefits:

  • Newfound confidence and improved self-esteem.
  • Comfort and peace of mind regarding the appearance of your ears.

With young children, Dr. Aycock is especially considerate in helping them feel more comfortable about having surgery done.

Preparing for Ear Surgery

You may be asked to have lab testing or a medical evaluation done to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your surgery. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

How Is Ear Surgery Performed?

In the case of protruding ears, surgical techniques help reduce the cartilage in the ear while creating or increasing the antihelical fold (the area inside the rim of the ear). Incisions are made within the folds of the ear so scars are easily hidden. Once the surgery is complete, non-removable sutures help hold the ear in place and allow the newly formed cartilage to adjust to its new shape.

Ear Surgery Recovery*

During otoplasty surgery, Dr. Aycock carefully shapes the cartilage of the ear to create a more balanced appearance. In some cases, even if only one ear protrudes, surgery may be performed on both ears for better symmetry.

Ear cosmetic surgery may create a small scar in the back of the ear that is barely noticeable and will continue to fade as healing progresses.

If stitches are used, they will typically dissolve or be removed about a week following ear shaping surgery.

Any activities in which the ears might be bent should be avoided for a month or so. In most cases, adults can expect to return to work about five days following otoplasty surgery. Most children can return to school about a week following ear surgery, as long as they are careful not to disturb the surgery site as the healing process continues.
