Tummy Tuck

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure through which excess fat and skin are removed from the abdominal area to create a slimmer, more fit body contour.

Women often elect for tummy tuck surgery following pregnancy, as the abdominal muscles and skin can be stretched during pregnancy. These muscles and skin can be tightened, and fat deposits removed during the tummy tuck procedure, allowing a woman to return to her pre-pregnancy shape.

Both men and women find abdominoplasty to be helpful in restoring a more youthful body contour when the abdominal skin becomes lax as a result of aging, or as a result of being overweight. A loss of skin elasticity is especially common in people who have lost a lot of weight, a problem that can be corrected with tummy tuck surgery.

Tummy tuck surgery may be performed alone or in combination with liposuction or other body contouring procedures for complete body sculpting.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a great way to give yourself the figure you’ve always wanted! In addition, you’ll also enjoy the following benefits:

  • A heightened self-image and improved self-esteem.
  • A more slender, proportional figure.
  • A well-contoured abdomen without the paunchy, sagging stomach.

Preparing for a Tummy Tuck

You may be asked to undergo lab testing or a medical evaluation to rule out any external issues that may interfere with your surgery. You may also be asked to start, discontinue, or adjust your current medication schedule. You’ll recover more quickly if you stop smoking, and you should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicines, or any herbal supplements as these can increase bleeding.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

The tummy tuck process involves an incision (length of the incision is dependent on the extent of the procedure) below the navel, from hip to hip. An incision may also be made around the navel. The skin covering the abdomen is separated from the underlying muscle and fascia. Dr. Aycock uses sutures to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall and hold them in place. Liposuction may be combined with this procedure to more naturally sculpt the transition between the belly, hips, and thighs.

Any excess skin and fat are removed with a scalpel before suturing the remaining skin back into place. Dr. Aycock may create a new hole for the patient’s navel if that portion of skin was removed, moving the belly button stalk to the new hole.

Abdominal skin is drawn down, and excess is removed. With complete abdominoplasty, a new opening is cut for the navel.

Mini-Tummy Tuck Option

If, for example, your fat deposits are limited to the area below the navel, you may require a less complex procedure called a partial abdominoplasty, also known as a mini-tummy tuck, which can often be performed on an outpatient basis. You may, on the other hand, benefit more from partial or complete abdominoplasty done in conjunction with liposuction to remove fat deposits from the hips for a better body contour. Or maybe liposuction alone would create the best result.

After your surgery, small tubes may be placed under your skin to aid with the drainage of excess fluid. You may also be required to wear an elastic compression garment to help your skin adjust to your new figure. It may take several months for the swelling to go down, during which your beautiful new figure will emerge!
