How Does a Facial Fat Transfer Work?

Are you interested in a facial fat transfer procedure, but not quite sure how it works?

Get ready, because you’re about to dive deep into the world of the facial fat transfer, including how it works and why you may want to get one.

First, the Liposuction

Facial fat transfer begins with a small liposuction procedure, where your plastic surgeon will harvest body fat from your stomach, thighs, or buttocks. Unless you are having a full cosmetic liposuction procedure, the amount of fat removed from the donor site will not change the body contouring in these areas.

Once the fat is harvested from the body, it’s placed in a centrifuge, where it’s cleansed and prepared for the next step of the treatment: injection.

Next, the Fat Transference

Your cleansed body fat will be placed in a special injection device, where it will be inserted into key areas where facial volume loss is most apparent. These popular treatment areas include the cheeks, marionette lines, temples, tear troughs, and more.

Results from a facial fat transfer treatment – which can take about an hour to perform – include smoother skin, minimized wrinkles and fine lines, and more youthful facial contours!

Why Get a Facial Fat Transfer?

Now that you know how a facial fat transfer is performed, you might have one question lingering in your mind: Why should you get one as opposed to, say, dermal fillers?

While fillers can be an excellent choice for some patients, the facial fat transfer comes with several unique benefits. Perhaps one of the strongest is that your body won’t reject your own fat, so there’s less likelihood that you’ll experience an allergic reaction.

What’s more, the results from your facial fat transfer can last a lot longer than results from dermal fillers. Studies have shown that dermal fillers begin to break down after a few weeks, leading to a steady decline in results. Approximately 50-60% of the fat transfer is permanent. Many patients are delighted with this result and enjoy a more youthful appearance for many months to a couple of years before considering another procedure.
