Often referred to as an eyelid lift, blepharoplasty can target the upper lids, lower lids, or both. Whether alone or combined with other procedures, blepharoplasty is the best way to achieve more youthful, expressive eyes with no visible scars.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty consists of two procedures, each of which addresses one part of the eyelid.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Dr. Aycock performs this procedure on the upper eyelid. He will use small incisions hidden in the creases of the eyelid to remove loose, drooping skin and fat from the upper eyelid and eyebrow areas. He will also reposition the muscle as needed to restore the lifted appearance of the eyelid. This makes eyes look younger, more alert, and brighter.

Lower Blepharoplasty

This procedure uses similar small incisions, which will disappear in the lower eyelid crease after surgery, to remove sagging skin and the fat pads that cause the appearance of undereye bags. As with the upper eyelid lift, Dr. Aycock will reposition the muscles if required to return them to their correct position. As a result, the eyes look more well-rested and youthful.

How Long is Recovery From Blepharoplasty?

Most people can return to work after 5 to 7 days, although it will take several weeks for all of the swelling to go away. You should avoid strenuous activity for the first week. You may return to regular exercise after four weeks.  Dr. Aycock will prescribe medications as needed and recommend other methods such as cold compresses to ease your discomfort.

What Results Will I See From My Blepharoplasty?

You will see eyes without drooping brows or sagging under eye bags. You will look more wide-awake, and with the removal of sagging skin over the eyes, you might even experience an improvement in your vision. For some people whose signs of aging appeared first in the eye area, this treatment may be the only one they need.

Blepharoplasty and Other Procedures

Blepharoplasty can be combined with a number of other facial procedures. For example, a facelift can improve the appearance of the skin around the eyes but does not address loose eyelid skin or fat deposits. A brow lift can lift away forehead lines and wrinkles caused by sagging skin, but it cannot lift drooping upper eyelids that make the eyes look hooded. Combining these and other procedures with blepharoplasty can improve results and make them even more effective.

Am I a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

If you have loose, sagging skin above or below your eyes, under eye bags, or drooping eyebrows, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty. Ideal candidates for eyelid lift surgery are in good health and do not smoke or can stop smoking for as long as Dr. Aycock specifies before and after surgery.
